Post Operative Instructions after Root Canal Treatment

Introduction

A root canal treatment helps remove infection and save your natural tooth. After the procedure, it is normal to experience mild discomfort or tenderness for a few days. Following the right care instructions will help the tooth heal properly and prevent further problems.

Important Post-Treatment Instructions

• Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration or crown is placed. The tooth may be weaker during this period.
• Take prescribed medicines exactly as advised by your dentist. Do not skip doses or stop medication early without consultation.
• Maintain good oral hygiene. Continue brushing twice daily and floss gently around the treated tooth to keep the area clean.
• Avoid very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods such as nuts, hard candies, chewing gum, or sticky sweets until the final restoration is done.
• Mild sensitivity or tenderness while chewing or touching the tooth for a few days is normal and usually settles gradually.

Pain or Swelling Management

If mild discomfort occurs after the treatment:

• Take the pain medication prescribed by your dentist.
• Avoid chewing on the treated side for a few days.
• Use warm salt-water rinses 2–3 times a day if advised by your dentist.

The discomfort usually reduces within a few days as the tooth heals.

When to Contact the Dentist

Please contact your dentist if you experience:

• Severe or increasing pain that does not improve
• Noticeable swelling around the tooth or face
• Your bite feels very high or uncomfortable
• The temporary filling comes out or feels loose

Early consultation helps prevent complications and ensures proper healing.

Final Note

It is very important to return for the permanent crown or final restoration after your root canal treatment. This protects the treated tooth, restores strength, and helps it function normally for many years.
